Jeffrey Gibson and María Magdalena Campos-Pons in Conversation with Dorothy Moss
Join National Portrait Gallery curator Dorothy Moss and artists María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Jeffrey Gibson as they discuss issues of identity and strategies for reinserting BIPOC histories into museum spaces through live performance and object making. The dialogue will explore how performance art is transforming the capacity of the nation’s museums to represent the experiences of those who have historically been excluded. This conversation will also consider how the “object of performance” has the potential to force museums to implement structural change—in programming, acquisitions, and operations—in order to remain relevant for contemporary artists and their audiences as well as future generations. Both Campos-Pons and Gibson have participated in the Portrait Gallery’s IDENTIFY performance art series. In 2016, Campos-Pons presented “Identified,” and in 2019, Gibson debuted “To Name An Other.”

This program is part of the Greenberg Steinhauser Forum in American Portraiture Conversation Series.
