Smithsonian 175th Film Fest: To Tropic Seas Aboard Velero III
All aboard! On Thursday, September 30th at 5 pm EDT, media digitization manager Kira Sobers will screen part of To Tropic Seas Aboard Velero III, which follows Smithsonian curator Waldo LaSalle Schmitt on his 1934 voyage to the Galapagos Islands. In addition to exploring the wildlife and marine life the crew studied on the expedition, the audience will also meet the infamous inhabitants on Florena Island, including the self-proclaimed Empress of the Galapagos. Come for the science. Stay for the witty narrator.

During the program, Sobers will discuss her work with audiovisual collections and the breadth of films at the Archives.

About the Smithsonian 175th Film Fest: Films from the Smithsonian Institution Archives

To celebrate the Smithsonian Institution’s 175th anniversary in 2021, the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives will host monthly programs featuring films from the collections of the Smithsonian Institution Archives. The series will be hosted virtually between August 2021 and August 2022.

What makes this series so special? In addition to the film screenings, archivists, conservators, and subject experts will also provide some context to the videos, share a little about their work, and answer questions from the audience during the one-hour programs. These screenings will also be the first instance that the films have ever been made available online to the public.
