Drop in on Design At Home: Adventures in Architecture
Celebrate NYCxDESIGN with Cooper Hewitt! Have you ever wondered how the building or library in your neighborhood was built? In this intergenerational workshop, learn the ins-and-outs of architecture design and use creative problem solving to tackle hands-on challenges inspired by the world around us. Then, put your creativity to the test as you use materials from around your home to create an architectural design of your own with guest designers from Snøhetta, 2020 National Design Award winner for Architecture Design.

This intergenerational program is suitable for families, youth, and adults. Participate as a family or join us on your own to learn more about the basic principles and elements of design. This is a beginner workshop, no prior experience in design required to participate.

Participants have the option to build a 3-dimensional design using everyday materials from their home. If you are interested in building a design, please collect materials prior to the workshop and have them ready for the workshop. Participation in all activities is possible without materials, or use a paper and any writing tools to record your brainstorming ideas.

For 30 years, Snøhetta has been working in a self-defined trans-disciplinary process, encouraging individuals to think outside of the usual constraints of their profession to engage with a more collaborative and non-hierarchical design process. Now with seven offices across the globe, the practice has maintained its original trans-disciplinary approach, integrating architectural, landscape, and interior design in all of its projects. Snøhetta’s noteworthy projects include the Library of Alexandria in Egypt, the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo, the National September 11 Memorial Museum Pavilion and Times Square in New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in California, among many others.
